Description
Kalter Stahl - Häuptlingssax
In handling sword, shield, spear, and axe, every Viking chieftain was skilled, or. an absolute expert. However, since these long, heavy, often bulky weapons were not always within immediate reach, the Vikings almost always carried a large seax knife with them around the clock. Usually, the sax hung in front or behind on the belt (wherever there was space, to not hinder the carrying of other weapons) and was immediately accessible in case of a sudden attack. In battle, he was often combined with other weapons
Although most sax knives tend to have the profile of Cold Steel's Woodsman's Sax (item no. 88HUA) had (with straight edge and convex, tapering towards the tip blade back), other variations were like the one presented here gebrochener Rücken Chieftain's Sax also quite popular.
The blade of the Chieftan's Sax was forged from carbon steel, tempered to spring hardness, and satin-finished. It has a so-called. "Broken-Back"-Profile, where the straight blade back initially rises very slightly, only to then abruptly drop towards the tip. Actually, in its basic form, it is not unlike a Clip-Point Bowie blade, but the Bowie preceded it by many centuries! Since the Chieftan's Sax is primarily designed as a weapon and plays only a secondary role as a tool, it is equipped with a discreet brass handguard that prevents the fingers from coming into contact with the blade and provides some protection against enemy weapons.
But what Cold Steel® is particularly proud of here is the hand-carved handle, which looks simply stunning with its intricate relief braided pattern. Together with the brass guard and pommel, a harmonious overall picture is created.
Each sax comes with a sturdy, historically accurate replica scabbard made of brown leather with brass fittings, a side seam with leather lacing, and authentic leather carrying loops.
1055 carbon steel
The carbon content and the relatively low levels of other substances in this steel make it a very stable material that is free from the brittleness inherent in most higher-carbon steels. This steel is ideal for blades that require high impact resistance and is therefore often used for large fixed-blade knives, machetes, and swords
