The historical significance of Chinese swords

Archaeological finds suggest that swords in China were already used in military conflicts in the 3th millennium BC. In addition to their function as effective close combat weapons, they often also symbolized power and wealth. Particularly representative Chinese swords were therefore often adorned with elaborate decorations.

Ancient Chinese swords were made of stone, bronze (from around 0 BC) or iron (from around 2nd century BC), often using the most advanced materials of the era. As Chinese swords were often far ahead of their time, they even served as a model for other types of swords - such as the first Japanese Samurai swords.

What types of Chinese swords are there?

The appearance of authentic Chinese swords and the material of their blade depend mainly on the historical epoch from which they originate. After all, the forging techniques and materials have been continuously improved over time. The different designs can essentially be assigned to two types of swords - the Jian and the Dao.

Jian - Often used as a status symbol

The Jian is a straight Chinese sword with a double-edged blade, designed primarily for cuts and thrusts. While the blade length of historical models ranges from 45 to 80 centimeters due to material constraints, modern versions typically have a blade ranging from 70 to 90 centimeters, generally slightly larger.

The Jian is considered the noblest of the classical Chinese weapons, which is why the sword often served as a ceremonial and prestige weapon for officers - but also wealthy individuals. In addition, effective handling of the Jian required years of training, which is why ordinary soldiers mostly resorted to the easier-to-use Dao.

Dao - Mainly used by the army

The Dao is a single-edged sword with a total length of about one meter, originating from the Mongolian cavalry saber. While early models have a straight blade, the later versions typically feature a curved one. Due to the strong resemblance of Chinese swords to sabers, they are often referred to as such in the European cultural sphere.

The sword was particularly worn by foot soldiers, used both as a cutting weapon and a thrusting weapon, often combined with a round shield. Already in the 3th century BC, the Dao was very common among Chinese soldiers.
