What is a spear?

A spear is a pole weapon that ranks among the oldest weapons used by humanity. Some spear elements found by archaeologists are several hundred thousand years old. For example, a wooden spearhead from Essex, England, is estimated to be 360.000 to 420.000 years old. In ancient times, spears were used as weapons – for example by the Persians, Germanic tribes, and Scythians. However, it was not until the adoption of the stirrup from East Asian tribes that the spear evolved into the primary weapon of heavy cavalry in the Middle Ages. This allowed the polearm to be placed under the arm, making it much more efficient to use. Due to the high production costs and lengthy training required, carrying a spear was reserved for the higher social classes.
