Kubotans & Tactical Pens

1-36 of 51

Kubotan and Tactical Pens offer an interesting alternative to other self-defense weapons such as pepper spray. When used correctly, attacks can be effectively repelled with these tools. Kubotans are sometimes also used in combat sports like Krav Maga or Jiu Jitsu in close combat or for self-defense purposes.

In the online shop of Meister Messer, you can get Kubotan Tactical Pens in various designs. Find out more about what Kubotan and Tactical Pens are in detail in the following guide. We also inform you about the legal regulations in Switzerland and what to consider when buying such a self-defense weapon.

What is a Kubotan?

A Kubotan is a close combat weapon in the form of a 13 to 15 centimeter long and up to 2,5 centimeter thick stick, which can be used as a striking and pressure amplifier. The handle can be made of metal, wood, or plastic and is usually equipped with grooves for better grip. Kubotans are often designed as keychains.

The Kubotan was developed in the 1980s as a self-defense weapon for female police officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). The term "Kubotan" is attributed to the inventor of the hand weapon – Soke Takayuki Kubota – who registered the name 1978 as a trademark in the United States. In the USA and many other countries, this close combat weapon is referred to as a Palm Stick.

In Switzerland, pure Kubotans are not allowed

Since Kubotans are primarily used as a baton or nerve pressure tool, they are considered "devices intended to injure people" here in Switzerland. Therefore, Kubotans fall into the same category as throwing stars and brass knuckles and may not be purchased, imported, or carried without an exemption. While the Weapons Act does not explicitly mention Kubotans, court rulings on this matter are quite clear. However, the situation is quite different if the Kubotan serves an additional purpose. As soon as it also functions as a lever tool, a bottle opener, or a pen, there is no longer a legal issue.

Tactical Pens: The legal alternative to the Kubotan

A tactical pen has a solid construction. Most self-defense weapons are equipped with an aluminum or steel body and are accordingly robust. Although a tactical pen can be used in the same way as a Kubotan, it is not prohibited in Switzerland. This is mainly due to its additional function as a pen.

Ultimately, a Tactical Pen is a combination of a pen and a Kubotan. Therefore, these handheld weapons are sometimes referred to as Kubotan Tactical Pens. An essential advantage: A tactical pen is not perceived as a weapon and therefore does not trigger panic.

Buy a Tactical Pen Kubotan: These variables are important

Now it will be explained how to find your personal Tactical Pen winner. The color and design are, of course, a matter of taste. However, there are other purchasing criteria that you should consider, especially:

  • Dimensions: The Tactical Pen should definitely fit well in the hand and be wide enough to grip securely. For individuals with large hands, a longer and more massive model is therefore recommended. The weight of tactical pens usually ranges between 30 and 100 grams. The higher the weight, the higher the potential striking energy.
  • Material: Kubotan Tactical Pens are typically made of light metals such as aluminum or stainless steel. In high-quality models, titanium is sometimes used as well. Quality materials ensure a particularly high level of rigidity, durability, and corrosion resistance.
  • Additional functions: Tactical Pens can sometimes be used not only as a pen and Kubotan. Often, manufacturers have integrated additional functions into the compact tools, such as a glass breaker and/or a seatbelt cutter. Many models also feature a clip to ensure that the Tactical Pen is always within reach.
