Battle Merchant - Viking Sword from Langeid with Scabbard
This beautiful late Viking Age sword is a reconstruction of a unique find discovered during the archaeological excavation of a Viking burial site in Langeid (Setesdal Valley, Bygland, Norway) from grave No. 8 exposed. The remarkably well-preserved find made of iron, gold, and silver is now on display at the Cultural History MuseumCultural History Museum) to admire in Oslo.
Due to the combination of spirals, runes, Latin letters, and crosses that richly adorn the handguard and pommel, the sword is approximately. 1030 dated original a true one-of-a-kind. Although their exact meaning is still mysterious, some of these motifs clearly carry a Christian message and suggest that this Nordic weapon was intentionally adorned with Christian symbolism. The dating of the sword (early 11. century, which marks the end of Nordic paganism and the beginning of the Christian Middle Ages in Scandinavia), reaffirms this assumption.
In addition, the one-handed sword was found together with a broad axe, which showed similarities to other axes discovered on the Thames in London from the same period. Therefore, some experts believe that the sword was brought from England to Norway and could have been the prestige or ceremonial weapon of a wealthy warrior (possibly one of the fighters of King Canute the Great).
Our reproduction of this extraordinary Viking one-handed sword features a double-edged blade made of spring steel EN45 with a wide, long fuller. The blades are not sharpened and the full tang is screwed and riveted to the pommel. The guard and pommel, made of cast (and partially tinned) brass, faithfully replicate the highly detailed motifs and patterns that adorned the handle of the original artifact. The handle with a wooden core is tightly wrapped with brass wire.
The Langeid sword comes with a brown wood/leather scabbard with a unique wooden strap closure (max. Belt width 5 cm) and brass fittings.
Please note that this sword is not suitable for combat. It is intended as a collector's item or. Decorative object designed and also excellent as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume.
